Any of the texture analyser range can be used for the product tests listed below. A selection of special attachments and typical measurements are also shown which are commonly used in this application area. However, this does not show the complete range of attachments available for the testing of pharmaceutical products. Test procedures include: compression, puncture/penetration, tension, fracture/bending, extrusion, cutting/shearing.

Typical measurements include: Bloom strength: gelatin gels Gel Strength and Gel-Forming Properties: wound dressings, jelly lubricants, contact lenses, soft gel capsules, suppositories Elasticity & Rupture Force: capsules, breast implants, coronary stents Tablet Strength Swelling and Disintegration: tablets Tablet Coating Adhesion Mucoadhesion Bioadhesion: transdermal patches, films Compressibility: powders, granules, pellets Breaking Strength: bones, artificial limbs, alginate rafts, hard capsules Syringeability: biogels Consistency: creams Adhesiveness: sputum, biogels, dentistry amalgums

Tablet Strength This diametral crush test identifies  important differences in tablet  characteristics missed by  conventional tablet strength  testers, which only measure the  point force at which the tablet  breaks.	Gels Standard probes such as that  required for gelatine testing  (BS 757), as shown above, are  available for the assessment of  Bloom strength/Gel strength or  rupture characteristics of gels.	Tablet Coating  Adhesion Fixture This test provides a quantitative  measure of the adhesion strength  of the coating to the tablet surface. Such a test is useful for studying  the consequences of changes in  tablet coating formulation variables.
Mucoadhesion Test Rig Tests of solid dosage forms, semi- solids such as ointments and gels  and even systems which solidify  on contact with the target organ  can be performed.	Bilayer Tablet Shear Rig (Registered Design) This rig enables tablet layer separation to be quantified.	Syringe Testing Rig (Registered Design) Allows measurement of the aspiration and extraction forces of syringes.
Cylinder probes Can be used to assess granule  compressibility.	Capsule Loop Tensile Rig (Registered Design) This rig measures the force required to split one half of a hard gel capsule.	Cylinder probes  (small/large diameter) Can be used to assess puncture/ compression force of e.g. capsules.
Powder Compaction Rig (Registered Design) Allows measurement of the compaction forces of powders.	Tube/Sachet Extrusion Rig Allows manufacturers to measure  the ease of removal and application  of products such as sauces, pastes, creams and gels.	Mini 3 Point Bend Rig Ideally suited to small diameter  samples such as tablets. Sample  supports can provide a 2mm  separation.
Film Support Rig This rig allows testing of thin, film- like products to measure the burst  strength, resilience and relaxation  properties.	Acoustic Emission and  Video Playback Allow the collection of acoustic data during a test and the synchronisation of force data with video frames - of particular interest for the testing of brittle products.

Application Studies are available for the testing of PHARMACEUTICAL products using the TA.XT2i, TA.XTplus, TA.XTExpress  or TA.HDplus texture analysers. In addition, scientific papers have been published which reference the use of the TA.XT2i/TA.XTplus/TA.HDplus in the testing of PHARMACEUTICAL products.
