Petfood and Animal Feed Testing

Ottawa Cell
Used for determining the
compressibility, and therefore the
ease of chewing, of dry petfood
in a bulk compression test.

Three Point Bend Rig
This rig reveals the break point,
demonstrating hardness and
brittleness or flexibility of dog
biscuits or snack sticks.

Back Extrusion Cell
This test makes unpleasant manual
assessments obsolete by providing
an objective imitative assessment
of faecal consistency.

Petfood and Animal Feed Testing

Cylinder Probes
Compression of cat food or fish
pellets tests for product hardness
or softness which may be vital to
palatability.

Kramer Shear Cell
Multiple shearing tests overcome
sample variability in meat based
products.

Multiple Puncture Probe
This probe has an averaging effect
on products of variable particulate
size or texture without the need for
very high forces to be applied.

Petfood and Animal Feed Testing

Acoustic Emission and
Video Playback
Allow the collection of acoustic
data during a test and the
synchronisation of force data with
video frames - of particular interest
for the testing of brittle products.

Any of the texture analyser range can be used for the product tests listed below.

A selection of special attachments and typical measurements which are commonly used in this application area are shown above. However, this does not show the complete range of attachments available for the testing of petfood and animal feed products. Test procedures include: compression, puncture/penetration, tension, fracture/bending, extrusion, cutting/shearing.

Typical measurements include:

  • Firmness/Hardness: dry petfoods, biscuits

  • Compressibility/Crush Force: dry petfoods
  • Tensile Strength: dog chews, pack materials, packaging seals
  • Crispness: snacks, biscuits
  • Break Strength/ Snapping Force: dog biscuits, snack sticks
  • Flexibility: wet petfoods
  • Consistency: faecal matter
  • Friction properties: packaging

Application Studies are available for the testing of petfood and animal feed products using the TA.XT2i, TA.XTplus, TA.XTExpress  or TA.HDplus texture analysers.

In addition, scientific papers have been published which reference the use of the TA.XT2i/TA.XTplus/
TA.HDplus in the testing ofpetfood and animal feed products.
