Medical Device Testing Attachments

TA.XTplus Texture Analyser

TA.XTplus
Texture Analyser

All of the texture analyser range can be used for testing the products listed below.

A selection of special attachments and typical measurements are also shown which are commonly used in this application area.  However, this does not show the complete range of attachments available for the testing of medical device products.  Test procedures include: compression, puncture/penetration, tension, fracture/bending, extrusion, cutting/shearing.

Metered Dose Inhaler

Metered Dose Inhaler

The metering valve, whose performance is assessed with this test, is a critical component of a finished metered-dose inhaler. Patients need to rely on their inhaler to provide them with the required medication which is often at a crucial time when physical strength may be very low.

Typical measurements include:

  • Needle Sharpness

  • Extrusion force: syringes

  • Metering valve performance: inhalers

  • Material Strength (tensile or compressive): catheters, tubing, surgical gloves, contact lenses

  • Tensile Strength: bandages, medical gloves, sutures, stents, adhesives

  • Compression fatigue: breast implants

  • Bond Strength: between thread and suture needle

  • Puncture Resistance: breast implants

  • Syringeability (expulsion and extraction forces)

Hypodermic Needle Sharpness Testing

Syringe & Hypodermic Needle

Needle sharpness is an important characteristic for patient comfort. This is determined by a puncture test where the needle is pushed through a substrate which is rigidly held.
The syringe body dispenses its contents by forward extrusion and is tested by measuring the average and peak extrusion force.

Tensile Grips

Tensile Grips
Used for the assessment of Seal Strength (an important characteristic of packaging to ensure sterile integrity).

Contact Lense Compression

Compression Probes
allow the hardness assessment of e.g. contact lenses

Application Studies are available for the testing of MEDICAL DEVICE products using either the TA.XT2i, TA.XTplus or TA.HDplus texture analysers.

In addition, scientific papers have been published which reference the use of the TA.XT2i/TA.XTplus/TA.HDplus in the testing of MEDICAL DEVICE products. Click here for paper titles and citation details.
