Medical Device Testing Attachments

Metered Dose Inhaler test - Texture Analysis

Needle Sharpness test - Texture Analysis

Tensile Grips - Seal strength - Texture Analysis

Metered Dose Inhaler
The metering valve, whose
performance is assessed with this
test, is a critical component of a
finished metered-dose inhaler.

Needle Sharpness
Determined by standard substrate
penetration, this is an important
characteristic for patient comfort.

Tensile Grips
Used for the assessment of
Seal Strength (an important
characteristic of packaging to
ensure sterile integrity).

Cylinder probe - contact lens test - Texture Analysis

Syringe Test Rig - Texture Analysis

Abrasion Test Rig

Compression Probes
Allow the hardness assessment
of e.g. contact lenses.

Universal Syringe Rig*
Allows measurement of the
aspiration and extraction forces
of a wide range of syringe
types and sizes.

Abrasion Test Rig
Analyses the frictional properties
of e.g. dental abrasive strips.

Application brochure

Any of the texture analyser range can be used for the product tests listed below.

A selection of special attachments and typical measurements which are commonly used in this application area are shown above. However, this does not show the complete range of attachments available for the testing of medical device products. Test procedures include: compression, puncture/penetration, tension, fracture/bending, extrusion, cutting/shearing.

Typical measurements include:

  • Needle Sharpness

  • Extrusion force: syringes
  • Metering valve performance: inhalers
  • Material Strength (tensile or compressive): catheters, tubing, surgical gloves, contact lenses
  • Tensile Strength: bandages, medical gloves, sutures, stents, adhesives
  • Compression fatigue: breast implants
  • Bond Strength: between thread and suture needle
  • Puncture Resistance: breast implants
  • Syringeability (aspiration and extraction forces)
  • Surface Tack: tubing
  • Flexibility/Rigidity: tubes, rods

Application Studies are available for the testing of medical device products using the TA.XT2i, TA.XTplus, TA.XTExpress  or TA.HDplus texture analysers.

In addition, scientific papers have been published which reference the use of the TA.XT2i/TA.XTplus/
TA.HDplus in the testing of medical device products.
